Hawaii’s first physician-owned hospitals – Hawaii Medical Center East and Hawaii Medical Center West – are dedicated to providing an excellent practice environment for medical professionals, and the very best medical care for patients. HMC provides cutting edge medical services in such areas as cardiovascular disease, organ transplantation, oncology, and ortho/neurology. These services are provided through our centers of excellence, which include:
The Atrial Fibrillation Center
HMC East is home to Hawaii’s first and only Atrial Fibrillation Center. The Center performs endoscopic abalation, an innovative, minimally invasive procedure that treats patients suffering from atrial fibrillation, a leading cause of stroke. Over the last two years, the Center has successfully treated 38 patients, catching the attention of mainland doctors seeking to establish atrial fibrillation centers in their own hospitals. HMC hosted several seminars in early 2008 to teach these doctors the groundbreaking procedure and continues to provide support in the establishment of new atrial fibrillation centers.
The Transplant Institute of the Pacific
HMC East’s Transplant Institute of the Pacific combines highly skilled physicians, nurses, and staff with state-of-the-art technology. The Transplant Center is the only medical center in Hawaii specializing in solid organ transplantation (heart, liver, kidney, and pancreas), and cell transplantation (peripheral stem cell and bone marrow).
The Thoracic Tumor Clinic
The Thoracic Tumor Clinic at HMC brings together a highly specialized multi-disciplinary team to address and plan the diagnostic and treatment options of patients quickly, thoroughly and professionally. The aim is to provide a comprehensive assessment and reduce the time often required for patients and primary care doctors to arrange multiple appointments. Each patient meets with a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and surgeon on the same afternoon to develop a care plan.
The Liver Center
The Liver Center at HMC offers superior up-to-date management and treatment of all liver diseases in a caring therapeutic environment. HMC’s liver disease specialists include a clinical research team that is producing important advances in the treatment of hepatitis B and C. The Liver Center is especially important in Hawaii, as Asians are a high-risk group for hepatitis.
Emerging Centers of Excellence
HMC continues to expand its areas of specialized medical and surgical services. Most recently, HMC unveiled its new Hand and Shoulder Clinic for patients suffering from these types of orthopedic problems.
National Recognition
HMC is proud of its highly qualified physicians, nurses, and staff, who are not only at the top of their fields, but also care deeply about the well-being of each and every patient with whom they work. Their work has not gone unnoticed.
The American Heart Association awarded HMC its “Get With The Guidelines–Coronary Artery Disease Gold Performance Achievement Award”, recognizing the hospital’s high standard of cardiac care that effectively improves treatment of patients hospitalized with coronary artery disease.
